TEHRAN, March 1 (UPI) — Sunni militant group Jundallah pledged to step up attacks on Tehran as new leadership emerges in the wake of a high-profile capture for Iran last week.
Tehran announced Tuesday that they had custody of Jundallah leader Abdolmalek Rigi. Jundallah claimed responsibility for an October attack in southern Iran that left several members of the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps dead.
The pan-Arab newspaper al-Arab in London reports Rigi was captured when Iranian fighter jets forced his flight from Dubai to Kyrgyzstan to land in Iran.
Jundallah ahead of his arrest called on minority groups in the border region between Iran and Pakistan to unite to wage attacks on the Iranian regime.
On its Web site, al-Arab said the Sunni group warned Tehran that it would face a movement “that is stronger and much more solid than ever before.”
The Sunni group claims it is fighting repression against the Sunni community in the border province of Sistan-Baluchistan.
Iran claims Washington is backing the group, alleging Rigi had contact with U.S. and NATO officials in Afghanistan prior to his Tuesday capture.
The terrorist monitoring group SITE said Jundallah appointed Muhammad Dhahir Baluch as its new leader.
