9 Apr 2010 – Medya News – Iran announced Friday it has advanced its nuclear technology, unveiling new, faster centrifuges and celebrating “giant steps” forward.
In a speech celebrating National Nuclear Day, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad slammed “selfish behavior” by “arrogant” countries that have tried to negotiate a halt to Iran’s nuclear activity. As he spoke, a crowd chanted “God is great” and “Death to America.”
“Today, Iranian scientists and experts have fully mastered the nuclear and have been taking giant steps and moving at full pace towards meeting all domestic needs and making proper use of home-grown potential in the field of nuclear energy,” Ahmadinejad said.
The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Ali Akbar Salehi, made the announcement at a ceremony commemorating the annual national nuclear day. “[The devices] have successfully gone through mechanical tests,” he told an audience, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Joint Armed Forces Chief of Staffs Major General Hassan Firouzabadi and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili, in Tehran’s Milad Tower conference room.
Tehran Times, State English daily also reported ”Iran unveiled its third generation of nuclear centrifuges and a facsimile of the nuclear fuel produced for the Tehran research reactor at a ceremony held on Friday at Milad Tower to commemorate the country’s National Nuclear Technology Day.
“The third generation of centrifuges is more efficient and can enrich uranium faster. The separating power of these centrifuges is six times higher than its predecessors. ” Tehran Times added.
US President Barack Obama also said there is no guarantee that a new set of United Nations sanctions against Iran will persuade it to halt its sensitive enrichment activities, AP reported.
Uranium enrichment is the sensitive process that lies at the heart of Western concerns about Iran’s nuclear program. The process can produce the fuel for nuclear reactors but in highly extended form can also make the fissile core of an atomic bomb.
