Khomeini’s Anniversary in Iraqi Kurdistan!

7 June 2010 – Medya News Editorial- This year, the Islamic regime in Iran commemorated the memory of the founder of the theocratic regime, Ayatollah Khomeini who died twenty one years ago, ten year following the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

The various factions of the regime have also turned this day into a match field to settle scores against each other, where each side claims to be the true follower of the cleric.holi_peshawa_le_hewler-300x145

Present at the ceremony in Tehran alongside Khomeini’s successor, Khamanie, was Khomeini’s grandson who was heckled by Basijis and Pasdaran who preferred the leader of Lebanese Hezbollah to be Khomeni’s grandson rather than Hasan Khomeini who has aligned with reformist factions in the past.

Our focus here is neither Khoneini’s anniversary nor questioning the faithfulness of the various elements of the regime to Khominie’s principles and beliefs, rather to the fact that this event was also marked in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan by the Iranian consulates in the region.

Of course, this is not a first time that Iran holds the anniversary in Iraqi Kurdistan, and it is quite normal for them to do so in various countries that they have representation, including Iraqi Kurdistan; however what is puzzling is that the regime has been holding this event at the Conference Centre called “Peshawa” Hall (meaning “leader” refering to legendary Iranian Kurdish leader, and the founder of Kurdistan Republic of 1945, Qazi Muhammad).

Furthermore, the Kurdistan Regional Government officials and its governing parties participate in these events at very high level, while paying little or no attention to the anniversary of Qazi Muhammad neither participate in the events held for the legendary Kurdish leader in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The subject of these few paragraphs is not whether they participate in Khomeini’s anniversary and at what level they participate, neither it is whether  or not they participate or hold memorials for Qazi Muhammad, rather it is the choosing of the venue for Khomeini’s anniversary.

The regime emissaries in Iraqi Kurdistan choose this venue deliberately to disrespect Qazi Muhammad and his followers who are still fighting this regime to realize Qazi Muhamad’s objectives.  Regrettably, the KRG officials including the city of Erbil are indifferent to the sensitivity of this matter and do not provide other venues for such gathering.

In this year’s memorial only a handful delegates from various Iraqi Kurdish political parties and government officials participated and there was no presence of ordinary people, so a smaller venue would have accommodated this anniversary for Khomeini.

This memorial was held in Erbil while Iran has been bombarding the Iraqi Kurdistan indiscriminately, resulting in the destruction of many villages and killings of a young girl.

Furthermore, this memorial was held in Iraqi Kurdistan in the “Peshawa” venue, when Iran has embarked on a campaign of killing Iranian Kurds since Khomeini and his demagogues came to power, and the latest was the execution of 4 Kurdish political prisoners.

It is also important to note that, in his message the Iraqi Kurdistan Speaker of Parliament, Kamal Karkuki hailed Khomeini and considered him as a “Martyer of freedom”, and referred to his ideas and belief “as a gift not just to Iran but to the whole region.”

This has caused outrage among Iranian Kurds who finds this to be deliberate disrespect to Qazi Muhammad and his followers and have demanded the Iraqi Kurdish officials to either provide another venue for this occasion or refrain from referring to the venue as “Peshawa”  Hall.
